A story was published recently by an Atlanta news station about a terrifying moment when a teenager playing volleyball went into cardiac arrest.
She was saved thanks to an automated external defibrillator, and the whole thing was caught on tape.
The story, published on Fox5 Atlanta’s website (fox5atlanta.com), has once again raised awareness of the importance of having available AEDs. AEDs use electrodes to analyze and detect cardiac arrhythmias and can produce a shock when the heart stops.
They save lives.
Dalton State understands the importance of AEDs and safety. There are several placed throughout campus.
The machine walks users through the process – where to put electrodes and when to begin CPR as well as other important steps in saving a person’s life.
In a cardiac arrest patient, time is crucial. For every minute the patient is not receiving CPR and defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 7-10 percent, according to the American Heart Association.
Many people at Dalton State have been trained on how to use the AEDs provided on campus, including Public Safety officers.
AEDs on campus are located in the following places:
Bandy gym: on lower level outside first aid room
Brown Center: in the main entrance lobby
Health Professionals: in the hallway next to room 209
Liberal Arts: outside room 277 (the break room on the second floor)
Maintenance: outside room 153
Memorial: just outside of the human resources office
Ottinger Athletic Center: second level
Peeples Hall: second level
Plant Operations: inside the receiving area
Pope Student Center: outside the Eddie Miller Room
Roberts Library: beside the staff break room on the lower level
Sequoya: outside room 153
Westcott: inside the business office lobby
Wood Valley: in the office
